In September is was announced that Pope Francis, the worldwide leader of the Catholic Church, would be releasing a progressive rock album. Even Rolling Stone magazine promised “skyscraping electric guitars reminiscent of Godspeed You! Black Emperor.”
If you are anxiously awaiting the most progressive of progressive rock albums, you are going to have to keep waiting. At no point on this album does Pope Francis channel his inner Peter Gabriel or break out his guitar for a Dream Theatre style guitar solo. In the end, the album is a collection of Pope Francis’s prayers and speeches accompanied by music. The only way in which the music becomes progressive is in it’s attempt to showcase music styles from around the world.
So if you were hoping Pope Francis would fill the void that will be left by RUSH when they stop touring, keep looking or maybe I should praying for something else to come along.
